A child challenged the notion that the all powerful God could do anything. The answer formed a contemporary proverb: “God can’t please everybody.” God’s delays, the enigma of evil and suffering do vex us, even drive us to anger. Jonah’s anger here was at God for not destroying the “evil empire.” Jonah says he should have known better than trust a God who is “abounding in steadfast love” to carry out Nineveh’s destruction. This strange story makes us uncomfortable. Do we forget all about God’s amazing grace to us, when we see God too “ready to relent from punishing those who deserve it?” When does our comfort become more important than compassion to the outsiders? The good news is that the indiscriminate love of Jesus covers us as well.
