The Prodigal God

Last Sunday we focused on the most amazing opening note: “In the beginning God created.” There you have a life affirming statement of preeminence, of priority. Yet the words which come later in Genesis 1 add a profusion of shapes and colors to the canvas of creation. Notice the phrase “all varieties” repeated here in verses 9-13, and later in the chapter the repetition of the word “swarm” to describe this profusion of life. God’s creation and salvation is prodigal meaning “giving or producing lavishly.” “… those entirely superfluous acts of intricacy and creative imagination; we do not need the underside of butterflies’ wings; or quite so many visible stars; we do not need babies’ toes to resemble tiny pink peas in pods” (Sara Maitland A Big Enough God p. 123). As Christ followers should not our art, science and worship reflect the lavish grace we have received?
