The Impossible Possibility of Christmas
A favorite Christmas carol proclaims, “Angels we have heard on High.” As far as our own experience is concerned “not so much.” Even if we extend “angel” to its root meaning “messenger” we have a tough time relating to Mary’s experience in this story. The point at which we do relate is in Mary’s reply, “How can this be…” That she would be an instrument in God’s unfolding plan seemed impossible. She did not appear to be “favored,” her limitations were evident. Even the idea of such a thing would require some “pondering.” Martin Luther thought that a large part of the miracle of Christmas was Mary saying “yes.” Who have been God’s messengers in your life? What has been your experience of saying “yes” to what seems impossible?
