The First Day

This year's first day comes on a Sunday. We begin the year by gathering together to worship the Creator and hear the words that have power to order our days: "In the beginning God...". For that to happen this week, this year there is a need to admit the formless void and "empty darkness" that haunts our openness to God's new beginning. De we dare trust that the One who declared, "Let there be light," can illumine out path at the threshold of a New Year? At the very time we ponder the wonder and mystery of Jesus’ birth, we are led to more questions: What can we know about the “birth” of the universe? What is the basis for seeing value in every human being? If God created all things good, how do we account for what is not good in the world? Where do we look for answers?
