Not the Light (11 a.m.)

Many believe that the most majestic part of the Bible is the poetic prologue of John’s gospel. With similar words and the cadence of the story of creation in Genesis 1, it is a hymn to the great God who came to dwell in human form. Yet in this exalted praise for the miracle of the Incarnation, there is a strange interruption in verses 6-8. Cousin John who is not the star of the Christmas heavens seems a distraction when we are awaiting the Word who was and is God. John the Baptist knows that he is not the light, and this allows him to be a witness to the Light. Do we see in him our role in the down to earth Christmas pageant? If we see, what keeps us from pointing to the Light?
