Cost Counting
Before you can get to the story Jesus told about counting the cost, there is a word that stops us. Are we really to hate “our loved ones” if we follow Jesus? The core of his mission is to enable us to “love one another,” that starts with family. Hate is used here as an extreme comparative. To love God in Christ is above all other love and empowers all other love. In Jesus welcome there is always a warning. Love is not a hobby. The builder or head of state must count the cost before launching a great enterprise. What does it mean for you for us “to give up everything?” Why in the world would we even consider that?
