Why Serve?  Key Bible Verses on Serving

Footwashing at Boulder Footwash...

Jesus came to serve, rather than to be served.  The most well known example of this was when he washed the feet of his disciples (John 13), a job that was traditionally done by a lowly slave. Through this act Jesus demonstrated the heart of a true servant, and set an example for us to follow. Each time we serve another we are becoming more like Christ.

Jesus gives us the greatest commandment in Matthew 22 " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" We show our love by serving others and this also shows Gods love for them.

In Jesus' last words before ascending into heaven, he commands us to: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20

God created us for serving! In Ephesians, Paul writes "For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10).

God has blessed each one of us with different gifts and abilities. In 1 Peter 4:10 we are instructed to, "…serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received."
