For a slideshow of the Kenya Mission Trip, click on the picture at left and then click on the slideshow icon. A First Presbyterian Church team went to Kenya, Africa in the last half of October 2010. The purpose of the trip was to further our partnership with Life in Abundance (LIA). The mission of LIA is to empower local churches to serve the poor using a holistic approach for community transformation. One group of pastors and churches we are working with is located in a slum area of Nairobi called Kibera. People in the Kibera slum often go without education, clean water and sanitation. Through the LIA programs they receive education, health care, and an opportunity to thrive. This trip provided training, encouragement, program assistance, and building our relationshp with LIA staff and the churches. (return to top) |

The Columbine All-Church Work Day was held on Saturday May 8th, 2010. There were over 160 people--some of whom stayed well beyond our ending time at noon, in order to finish a few of the school's wish list tasks. Some left and came back to see if there were other needs. We had families serving together, small groups together, teachers and teams, high school mission trip participants, etc. Age range of participants: 2 years to 84 years. Work done: gardening, yardwork, classroom cleaning, handyman jobs, library reshelving and reordering of all books, painting, re-sealing the stage in the courtyard, reorganization of the staff workroom, closet cleaning and inventory, taking photos and video, etc. All in all, it was a great day and much appreciated by the Columbine Faculty. Some of their comments were:
"The people helping in my room were the nicest people!"
"I got all teary this morning seeing all those people show up to help us!"
"You have made my job so my easier in the long-run by getting all these big and small things done today."

Acuna, Mexico House Building Short Term Mission
March 22- 26, 2010

Several families and two Fishy and Club leaders from First Pres dedicated their Spring Break to a cross-cultural partnership with Casas por Cristo to build a home for a Mexican family in the border town of Acuna. In just four days, the team of 18 transformed an otherwise empty lot into a home with a real foundation and floors, lockable doors and windows, electric lights, and insulated walls and ceilings. The home, a gift from First Pres, will provide safety and shelter for Doroteo his wife Yaradith and their three children. For the team this trip was an opportunity to serve by giving this tangible symbol of Christ's unconditional love and faithfulness to a family truly in need. In return, our families were blessed with an experience that will last a lifetime. Take a few minutes to scan through the pictures, pray for all families trapped in extreme poverty, and consider this trip next year for your family. (return to top)

Senior Adult Ministry Cuba Short Term Mission
January, 2010
The Senior Adult Ministry took a mission trip to Cuba in January. We partnered with a 42 year old Cuban pastor, Willie Santiago, the founder of Cuban Connections, whose goal it is to connect Cubans with Americans, the Cuban church with the American Church, Christian denominations within Cuba with each other, and the Cuban communists with the Cuban Church. Part of what we did was to work on Willie’s farm. Willie’s dream is to eventually feed the patients in the area hospitals, as well as the 2,500 area residents, in the name of Jesus.
