“You are the salt of the earth… You
are the light of the world… Let your good deeds shine
out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly
Father.” Matthew 5:13, 14, 16 (NLT)
The Mission of KIDS
HOPE USA is to demonstrate Christ’s love by building caring
relationships...one child, one hour, one church, one school. Mentors
from First Pres work with children at Columbine Elementary School in
north Boulder, which is about 5 minutes from the church. Volunteers
meet with children in 1st - 5th grades for one hour a week from September
through May at the school. Each mentor and student also receives vital
prayer support from a prayer partner. It is exciting to see the ways
Jesus is making a difference in the Columbine community through the
love and concern shown by members of our church.
Sam was a tough kid with an extremely bad attitude. Defiant
and oppositional, his threatening behaviors were at once a plea for attention
and a demand to be left alone. Sam was 6 years old. The teacher was pleased
that Sam was matched with a KIDS HOPE mentor but wondered if an 80+ year
old woman could manage this challenging child. She need not have worried.
In her words, Sam "changed dramatically. He became a strong student
with successful independence." The reason? Ruth "provided support,
love and dependable mentoring for this child." She was there for
him week after week with kindness and love. Her belief in him made it
possible for Sam to believe in himself.
The opportunity is enormous. The need is great. The idea
is simple: One Child, One Hour, One Church, One School. Will you be the
one to make the difference in the life of a child at Columbine Elementary
School? To learn how to be matched with a student please contact Linda

Special Events:
A Prayerwalk to Uphold Columbine Elementary School. On
Sunday, September 23 from 1:00-2:00 p.m., we will be surrounding Columbine
Elementary School (3130 Repplier St., Boulder)
in prayer.
By gathering
at
the school, we will be meeting God where we expect our prayers to
be answered. As we move through four stations around the school,
prayer leaders will guide us in prayers for the Kids Hope Ministry
including the
mentors, students, teachers, prayer partners, school and families
as
well
as the community. We will also have verses to meditate on, quiet
time for
reflection and the names of specific students with a prayer request
for each participant to include in his prayers. Everyone, all ages,
is invited
and needed. Come anytime during the hour allowing about 30 minutes
to complete the walk. Maps and prayer requests will be available
at
the
September 16 and 23 church services. For more information, please
contact Linda
Overholser.
